What happened in the ‘Coup D’etat’?
A
- The coup d’etat, also known as the ‘coup of brumaire’, is generally taken to mark the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of Napoleon Bonaparte’s dictatorship (November 1799)
- The government was bankrupt, while inflation, taxations, and unemployment were soaring. The Directory had lost control in much of the country
- Napoleon removed the Directory from power and established a new government called the Consulate. He declared himself the First Consul and the most powerful member of the government.

- Napoleon was not satisfied with his position and waned to proclaim himself the Emperor of France
- In 1804, he organised a grand coronation for himself and also invited the pope to the ceremony
- He declared himself the ‘Emperor of France’
