What happened in the ‘Coup D’etat’?

A
  1. The coup d’etat, also known as the ‘coup of brumaire’, is generally taken to mark the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of Napoleon Bonaparte’s dictatorship (November 1799)
  2. The government was bankrupt, while inflation, taxations, and unemployment were soaring. The Directory had lost control in much of the country
  3. Napoleon removed the Directory from power and established a new government called the Consulate. He declared himself the First Consul and the most powerful member of the government.

  1. Napoleon was not satisfied with his position and waned to proclaim himself the Emperor of France
  2. In 1804, he organised a grand coronation for himself and also invited the pope to the ceremony
  3. He declared himself the ‘Emperor of France’
