How was the enlightenment a cause behind the French Revolution?
The enlightenment period was known for the spread of new ideas, rationality, freedom of speech, religious tolerance, reduced judicial torture and equality.
It was known as the age of reason. It was a philosophical movement that dominated the world of ideas in Europe in the 18th Century. Thinkers accepted and questioned knowledge and spread new ideas about rationality and religious tolerance throughout Europe and America.
The french historians mark the period of enlightenment between 1715 and 1789. The ideas of the French Revolution, such as liberty, fraternity and equality, were products of the Enlightenment.
