NAPLEX Dyslipidemia Flashcards
What organ in the body produces cholesterol?
The liver
What does the liver use cholesterol to make?
Bile acids
What is the role of bile acids?
They travel through the bile ducts to the small intestines where they are required for fat absorption
What are the bile acids turned into in the small intestines?
Bile salts that are recycled
Enterohepatic cycling: definition
The process of cholesterol being used to form bile acids which are converted to bile salts by acid in the small intestines that are transported back to the liver to reuse.
Cholesterol has two methods of exiting the body:
free cholesterol or bile acids
How is cholesterol transported?
Lipoproteins because it can’t dissolve in the blood
What are the three main lipoproteins?
LDL, HDL, and vLDL
What do the lipoproteins carry?
triglycerides
What is non-HDL
TC - HDL
What is included under the title non-HDL
LDL, IDL, vLDL, chylomicron remnants, and lipoprotein a
What is a high-risk marker and indicator of the progression of atherosclerosis?
apolipoprotein b
What can elevations in non-HDL, LDL, and TG put a person at risk for?
Atherogenic disease
What is a stronger predictor of ASCVD than LDL alone?
non-HDL
What can elevated TG lead to?
Acute pancreatitis
