What are the classifications of BP?
Normal, elevated, stage 1, and stage 2
What is a normal BP?
SBP less than 120 and DBP less than 80
What is an elevated BP?
SBP 120-129 and DBP less than 80
What is stage 1 HTN?
SBP 130-139 or DBP 80-89
What is stage 2 HTN?
SBP greater than or equal to 140 or DBP greater than or equal to 90
How do you classify a patient with a SBP and DBP in two different categories?
Use the higher category
What happens to BP with increasing age, and what study proved this finding?
It progressively increases as proven by the John Hopkins Precursor Study
What were the findings of the MESA study?
Prevalence of HTN was higher in African Americans and Hispanics compared to Whites and Chinese (African Americans, Hispanics, Whites, and then Asians).
How many BP readings are required to diagnose HTN?
At least two readings on two separate visits
What is the first line therapy for SIHD (Post-MI, CSA)?
ACE/ARB and beta blocker
What are the additional therapies for SIHD (Post-MI, CSA)?
CCBs, thiazide, or aldosterone inhibitor
What is the first line therapy for HF with reduced EF?
ACE/ARB and beta-blocker and aldosterone antagonist
What are the additional therapies for HF w/ reduced EF?
Diuretics for fluid overload
What meds are contraindicated in patients with HF w/ reduced EF?
Non-DHP CCBs
What is the first line therapy for HF w/ preserved EF?
ACE/ARB, beta-blocker
