what is nanoscience?
Nanoscience is the study of structures and materials on an ultra-small scale. A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. The physical and chemical properties of matter change at the nano level.
how big are nanoparticles?
1-100 nanometres long. (a nanometer is one billionth the size of a meter)
what are fine particles?
Fine particles are airborne particles which are smaller than coarse particles. They have an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less (PM2.5). The fine particles which are smaller than 0.1 µm are referred to as ultrafine particles (PM0.1). Fine particles are largely formed from gases.
what are coarse particles?
Coarse particles (also known as PM10-2.5): particles with diameters generally larger than 2.5 µm and smaller than, or equal to, 10 µm in diameter. Note that the term large coarse particles in this course refers to particles greater than 10 µm in diameter.
how does a particles surface area and volume increase as its size decreases?
It also means that when a given volume of material is made up of smaller particles, the surface area of the material increases. Therefore, as particle size decreases, a greater proportion of the particles are found at the surface of the material and the volume decreases because the size decreases.
