Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
describe a covalent bond
A
a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
2
Q
how does a covalent bond form?
A
when the atoms involved share electrons and bond together so they both have full outer shells.
3
Q
how are double and triple covalent bonds formed?
A
the same as how singular covalent bonds are formed but more of one type of ion is needed to complete the outer shell so more ions need to bond with it. An example is ammonia.
4
Q
name some familiar molecules that contain covalent bonds
A
ammonia, hydrogen, water
5
Q
what are the differences of singular and double or more covalently bonded molecules?
A
doubles are stronger and have shorter bond lengths.
