Nanoparticles Flashcards
What size are nanoparticles?
1-100 nm (the same size as a few hundred atoms or molecules)
How big is a nanometre ( nm ) ?
10 ^ -9 m or 0.000000001 metres
What are the uses of nanoscience?
Used in the cosmetic industry, especially in suncreams.
Benefits of using nanoparticles in suncream
• Better skin coverage
• most effective protection from uv waves
• clear and colourless - invisible on the skin
• do not degrade on exposure ( no harm to skin )
Risks of using nanoparticles in suncream
• Potential cell damage - nanopanticles are so small so they may be able to penetrate membranes or be breathed in
• harmful effects on environment
What are the risks of nanoscience?
• Breathing in nanoparticles , cause inflammation of the lungs.
• nanoparticles may be absorbed into the blood stream.
• nanoparticles in the body may cause cell damage.
