Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
a single element or compound not mixed with any other substances. For example, water or gold. It has a specific melting or boiling point.
Testing for water (a pure substance).
• Melting point = 0°c
• Boiling point = 100°c
Anhydrous copper (II) sulfate
A white solid - used as a chemical test for water
→ white solid turns blue
Examples of mixtures
① paracetamol
② asboric acid
③ sucrose
④ aspartame
What is an alloy?
A mixture of two or more elements, one of which is metal → results in metallic properties
What is a formulation?
A mixture Winn is designed to be a useful product and is formed by mixing several different substances in specific quantities to ensure certain properties
Soluble
Dissolves in water
Insoluble
Doesn’t dissolve in water
Solute
Substance which dissolves
Solvent
The liquid in which the solute dissolves
Solution
Mixture of solute dissolved in a solvent
Residue
The solid that remains
Filtrate
The filtered solution
Distillate
The liquid that’s cooled from the vapour and collected during distillation
Miscible
Liquids that mix
