Naming Compounds Flashcards

1
Q

Formulas for ionic compounds

A
  1. Write the symbol for the metal cation and its charge then the symbol for the nonmetal anion and its charge
  2. adjust the subscript on each cation and anion to balance the overall charge
  3. check that the sum of the charges of the cations equals the sum of the charges of the anion

Naming Molecular Compounds

A
  1. prefix + name of 1st element
  2. prefix + base name of 2nd element +ide
-first name the metal element; element with the smaller group number first; if they are in the same group -> element with the greater row number first
