Naming compounds Flashcards

1
Q

To name binary (stands for two) ionic compounds with Type I metals, this is the process to follow below:

A

Step 1: Is it a common exception? If not, go to step 2.
Step 2: Name the metal.
Step 3: Name the non-metal but change the ending of the non-metal to -ide. For example, bromine becomes bromide.
Step 4: The name is the metal and then the non-metal with its new ending.

Q

Name LiF.

A

Step 1: Is it a common exception? No.
Step 2: Name the metal-it is Type I, Lithium.
Step 3: Name the non-metal and change the ending to -ide. Fluorine becomes fluoride.

Q

Name NiC.

A

Step 1: Is it a common exception? If not, go to step 2.
Step 2: Name the metal. Nickel
Step 3: Name the non-metal and change ending to -ide. carbon becomes carbide
Step 4: Determine the charge of the non-metal. carbon is in Group IVA) so -4.
Step 5: Write the name of the metal and the charge of the non-metal in Roman Numerals (to balance out charge) in parentheses and then write the non-metal name ending in -ide. Nickel (IV) carbide

To name binary (stands for two) ionic compounds with Type II metals, this is the process to follow below:

A

tep 1: Is it a common exception? If not, go to step 2.
Step 2: Name the metal.
Step 3: Name the non-metal and change ending to -ide.
Step 4: Determine the charge of the non-metal. This is based upon where it is at on the periodic table. In Group IVA (14), the charge is -4. In Group VA (15), the charge is -3. In Group VIA (16), the charge is -2 and in Group VIIA (17), the charge is -1. Group VIIIA (18) are the noble gases which typically have no charge because they do not need to bond with other elements to be stable because they already have 8 valence electrons in their outer shell.
Step 5: Write the name of the metal and the charge of the non-metal in Roman Numerals (to balance out charge) in parentheses and then write the non-metal name ending in -ide.
