household of a father, mother and 2 children
- Durkheim and functionalists view it as a fundamental constitution that is the most valuable type of family to support a child

a family with one single parent and functionalists believe that this is a key reason why children struggle and break norms as they don’t have the stability of having 2 parents

married couple with at least one child from previous relationship

- functionalists believe this affects a Childs primary socialisation as they don’t have the stability of a nuclear family
vertically extended family
family with multiple generations living together
horizontally extended family
family extended horizontally across the same generation (uncles, aunts, cousins)
cohabitation
a couple which aren’t married but live together
empty nest family
a family in which the parents children have left the family home
empty shell family
2 partners who have no emotional or sexual ties to each other but live with their children in one household
single person
a person who lives alone
matriarchal/focal family
family with the female at the head/breadwinner and passes this down to daughters to reproduce female dominated family
patriarchal family
male is at the head and main breadwinner and passes this down to sons to reproduce a male dominated family
