Primary DOPs: DO La Mancha, DO Valdepeñas
NTG: Spain’s most planted white grape.
Airén, also most planted red or white grape in 2017

Albillo Mayor
Synonyms: Albilla, Pardina, Turruntés
Autonomous Region: Castilla y León
Primary DOP: DO Ribera del Duero
[mayor is highest, RdD is further north in Spain than Madrid]
What are the characteristics of the Albillo grape?
none - it is a non-specific (and potentially confusing) reference to many different grapes, literally the “little white one”; the so called Albillo grapes do not have related DNA; it most often refers to the only cultivated varieties: Albillo Real or Albillo Mayor
NTG: This white grape does well in hot, dry areas with sandy soils. It buds early, which makes spring frost a potential problem. Wines are fairly neutral but have a weighty mouthfeel. Primary DO is DO Vinos de Madrid
Albillo Real [Primary DOP is near Ciudad Real]
Synonyms: Albillo, Albillo de Madrid
Autonomous Regions: Madrid
Primary DOP: DO Vinos de Madrid
NTG: this white grape has thick skins, but mildew can be a problem. Wines are mineral with bright acidity, and display floral aromatics coupled with flavors of peach, apricot and grapefruit.
Albariño
Synonym: Alvarinho (Portugal)
Autonomous Region: Galicia
Primary DOP: DO Rías Baixas
NTG: this white grape is one of the Iberian peninsula’s oldest varieties and thought to have parented at least 16 grapes including Listán Prieto and Portugal’s Castelâo. The vine is drought-resistant and productive and thrives in warm growing conditions and sandy soils. Wines are generally moderate in both alcohol and acidity and neutral in aroma and flavor.
Cayetana Blanca
Synonym: Jaén Blanco, Pardina
Autonomous Regions: Extremadura, Castilla-
La Mancha
Primary DOP: DO Ribera del Guadiana
NTG: a French white grape variety. In Spain, it is thought that many vines identified as Hondarribi Zuri are in fact this grape. This small-berried grape produces subtle wines with moderate acidity and alcohol.
Courbu Blanc
NTG: Synonym for Síria
Doña Blanca (aka Malvasia Castellana)
NTG: this white grape is native to Málaga in Andalucía and is the likely offspring of Albillo Mayor. The clusters are medium in size with small berries and are prone to mildew. Its wines tend to be full-bodied and highly aromatic with notes of pear, citrus peel, and almond. There is a saline character along with racy acidity.
Doradilla
Where is Doradilla found?
Primary DOP is in the Las Islas Canarias in DO La Gomera
NTG: this white grape crafts a high-alcohol, moderately low acid wine that is prone to oxidation. Careful vinification, including low-temperature fermentation, lees aging and skin maceration, results in distinctively textured wines with intriguing floral notes.
Garnacha Blanca
Synonym: Garnatxa Blanca
Autonomous Region: Cataluña
Primary DOPs: DO Alella, DO Terra Alta
What are the main differences between Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Blanca?
these are color mutations with the same DNA profile; Garnacha Blanca buds a little later and ripens a little earlier than the red version.
NTG: this white variety is most likely not a single grape at all, but it refers to a variety of grapes, both vinifera and hybrid, depending on the vineyard
Hondarribi Zuri, reference samples include Courbu Blanc (most widely-planted), Crouchen, and the American-hybrid, Noah.
NTG: this high-quality, aromatic white variety, often ripens to high sugar levels, resulting in full- bodied wines with ample alcohol. These wines are balanced by good levels of acidity and are capable of aging.
Godello
Synonym: Prieto Picudo Blanco
Why is Godello often compared to Chardonnay?
both very high quality grapes can produce full bodied wines that hold up well to barrel-aging; they have a tendency to reflect the hand of the winemaker.
NTG: very high quality white variety that was rescued in the 1970’s in Galicia.
Godello
NTG: This white grape is indigenous to Castilla-La Mancha.
Airén
NTG: This white grape is quite productive and drought-resistant, especially when grown in clay soils. Wines from are often high in alcohol and acidity. It is native to Andalucía but is also grown around Madrid. Primary DOPs are DO Vinos de Madrid, DO Málaga
Lairén
Synonym(s): Malvar
What is the synonym for Listán Blanco?
Palomino, not related to Listán Negro
NTG: This white grape is believed to be native to Catalunya. It is late to bud and ripen and does best in hot, dry growing conditions as it is prone to rot. It produces a wine that is aromatically subtle with low to moderate acidity. Because it is resistant to oxidation, it responds well to barrel aging.
Macabeo
Synonyms: Viura, Macabeu, Maccabeu (France)
Autonomous Regions: La Rioja, Cataluña
Primary DOPs: DOCa Rioja, DO Cava
What is the synonym for Malvar?
Lairén
NTG: it is an ancient white grape whose plantings reach from Croatia to Las Islas Canarias.
