Ringworm of the nail caused by a fungus entering the nail at the free edge. Nail becomes discoloured & thickened & can have a green tinge
ONYCHOMYCOSIS
White spots on the nail plate. Caused by tiny bubbles of air trapped in the nail plate layers due to trauma.
LEUKONYCHIA
Inflammation of the matrix. Pus may form and the nail may shed. Caused by the introduction of pathogens through small wounds. The skin around the nail becomes red, swollen & inflamed.
PARONYCHIA
Nails are weak, thin and soft like
eggshells. They can appear cloudy, often due to illness, stress or poor diet, leading to deficiencies.
ONYCHOMALACIA
Superficial vertical ridges in the nail plate, the nail plate grows forward in a rail and groove effect. Caused by uneven growth, aging and possibly illness.
CORRUGATIONS
Spoon shaped nails, a systemic disorder causing the nail growth to splay the sides with a depression in the centre. Causes may include, inherited abnormality, anemia or overactive thyroid.
KOILONYCHIA
Cuticle that has split and adhered to the nail plate & cannot continue to move forward with growth of the nail, Prone to infection, can be a result of pterygium.
HANGNAILS
Hardened growth of cuticle which has overgrown and stuck to the nail plate.
