Who is Oedipus?
King of Thebes, solved the riddle of the Sphinx and wants to find out about the reason behind the plague and who killed Laius. Prophesied that he would murder his father and marry his mother. Brought the plague to Thebes.
Who is Jocasta?
Queen of Thebes, wife of Oedipus, widow of former king. Reveals the prophecy about Oedipus as a child. Parental figure in the Oedipus complex.
Who is Teiresias?
A blind prophet who has guided the king of Thebes with advice and counsel. The catalyst for the prophecy’s reveal. Hints at Oedipus’ actions following confirmation of the prophecy. truth rejected by a willful and proud king.
Who is Kreon?
Second-in-command in Thebes, brother-in-law of Oedipus, selected to go to the oracle at Delphi. Embodies voice of reason. Calm, protects Oedipus with gentle firmness, and is sensible/responsible + a good leader.
Who is Laios?
Killed by Oedipus. Father of Oedipus. Former king of Thebes.
What is the Oedipus Complex?
Childhood attraction and dvelopment. Competition with same-sex parents and having sexual desire for their opposite-sex parents. Resolution of the complex stops seeing the same-sex parent as the enemy and starts identifying with him(mimics and adopts parts of his personality) + seeks attraction to other opposite-sex figures.
What is Maternal Instinct?
pregnancy or providing physical, psychological, or spiritual nourishment.Motivates to nurture others, be generous + giving, and find satisfaction as a caretaker and provider.
How does Demeter figure out the maternal archetype?
She observes during her clinical practices of women, how women act and behave.
What is the social/psychological pattern?
There are challenges and a wise helper that leads to a helpful discovery and after solving it returns to self. Story about maturing and leaving a familiar world.
Themes of Freud, the Interpretation of Dreams?
Myth reveals inner thoughts/feelings Strings of Sexuality: Oedipus story re-brings dreams of repressed feelings and as maturity it becomes detachment.
