Myoclogy Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 classifications for fungi?
A
- Unicellular (yeasts)
- Filamentous (moulds)
- Dimorphic
2
Q
Features of unicellular fungi
A
- yeasts
- facultative anaerobes
- reproduce asexually by budding
- produce colonies on agar
3
Q
Features of filamentous fungi
A
- Moulds
- Aerobes
- reproduce by conidia (asexual spores)
- Produce mycelia on agar
4
Q
Dimorphic fungi
A
- these are best adapted to grow in our tissue bc they can grow as filamentous fungi when they are in the environment and grow as yeasts when they invade us, bc they can switch forms
5
Q
Dermatophytes
A
- Cause tinea
- Different species prefer diff host and tissues
6
Q
Subcutaneous mycoses
A
- mycetoma (maduromycosis)
- can be caused by bact or fungi
- treatment will be diff depending
- Fungi not susceptible to ABs
- fungal cause= madurella spp.
7
Q
Name examples of opportunistic mycoses?
A
- Candida albicans
- Cryptococcosis
- Apergillus spp.
8
Q
Cryptococcosis
A
- caused mainly by 2 agents:
1) C. neoformans
2) C. gatti
almost always inhaled- but often get very mild infection.
But if it spreads to body via blood can cause meningitis in inmmunocompromised people or in the case of C.gattii- even in someone who is immunocompetent
Types of Diseases:
- meningitis
- pulmonary infection
Antigen test is used a lot for this
9
Q
Apergillus spp.
A
- filamentous fungi
- can take on diff clinical forms:
a) Saprophytic (fungus ball)
b) Allergic
c) Systemic
