Myocardial Infarction Flashcards
What factors determine the amount of blood pumped out of the heart?
Heart Rate
Stroke Volume
Think about the factors that change HR and SV
What factors determine the amount of blood pumped through a given tissue?
Q=X(TC)-([Xa]-[Xv])
What does a normal ECG look like?
Rhythmic
Look at abnormalities
What happens during each part of an ECG?
P wave=atrial depolarization
QRS complex=ventricle depolarization
T wave=ventricle repolarization
What keeps the heart beat regular?
The SA node controls rhythm via constantly changing ion channels…Ca is the major player
For irregular heart beats see Heller Ch. 5
Think about what causes the normal pain associated with an MI…
Know it!!
What is NTproBNP?
A polypeptide secreted by the ventricles in response to excessive stretching…CHF indicator
Which troponins are used in diagnosing cardiac damage?
Troponin I and T
Peak concentrations ~32hrs after damage is done
What percentage of Americans have an MI?
6.5%…I don’t know why they’d ask us about this
What are some of the risk factors of CAD? Why?
Tobacco use High BMI High cholesterol (LDL) Hypertension Male Depression
What is a coronary angiogram?
Opaque dye is injected into the ventricles
Shows where blood is flowing (and blocks)
Be able to recognize the drugs and procedures necessary during/after an MI
Drugs are band-aids
The problem has to be fixed surgically
How can statins help with CAD?
Short term the help stabilize plaques
Long term decreases LDLs
What is the net effect of nitroglycerine?
Decreases stroke volume–>decreased cardiac stress/workload
How does aspirin reduce MI risk?
Aspirin irreversibly binds to platelets
Prevents synthesis of TXA2–>prevents aggregation
