myeloid malignancies (Rachel) Flashcards
acute myeloid leukaemia pathology
uncontrolled proliferation of myeloid cells, displaces normal bone marrow
presentation of AML
anaemia neutropenia thrombocytopenia splenomegaly bone pain painful/swollen gums in some cases
investigations for AML
blood film - high proportion of blast cells
bone biopsy
risk factors for AML
60+
radiation
management for AML
MDT supportive care chemo cytosine arabinoside bone marrow transplant
chronic lymphocytic leukaemia pathology
proliferation of B cells
has three phases
stages of CML
chronic - lasts 5yrs, usually asymptomatic
accelerated - abnormal blast cells take up lots of the marrow and blood, symptoms start
blast - higher proportion of blast cells, severe symptoms can cause death
investigations for CML
FBC - raised WCC
blood smear - many immature lymphocytes
risk factors for AML
60-70 yrs
Philadelphia chromosome
management of CML
imatinib TKI
hydroxyurea
interferon-alpha
allogenic bone transplant
