What is myelodysplastic syndrome?
A
Caused by myeloid bone marrow cells not maturing properly -> leads to lack of production of healthy blood cells

What are people myelodysplastic syndrome at an increased risk of?
A
> 60
People who have previously had chemo or radiotherapy
Can transform into AML

What might patients present with?
How is it diagnosed?
A
Anaemia
- fatigue
- pallor
- SOB
Neutropenia
-recurrent severe infections
Thrombocytopenia
- purpura
- bleeding
Diagnosis:
- FBC
- blasts on blood film
- bone marrow aspirate + biopsy

How are peopke with myelodysplastic syndrome managed?
A
Watchful waiting
Supportive treatment i.e. blood transfusions if severely anaemic
