MYCOLOGY INTRODUCTION Flashcards
Cell wall of fungi
CHITIN
Yeast reproduce through what?
Budding or Fission
A single vegetative cell that forms a smooth, creamy and bacterial like colony.
YEAST
A vegetative cell that has a fuzzy or wooly appearance because of the formation of mycelia
MOLDS
Long strands of tube like structures of molds
HYPHAE
Mass of hyphae
MYCELIA
What are the types of MYCELIA?
Aerial- responsible for the wooly and fuzzy appearance of molds
Vegetative- responsible for the nutrient absorption of the molds
What are the forms of vegetative mycelia
Antler Hyphae- Antler-shaped with swollen tips
Racquet Hyphae- has club shaped appearance
Spiral Hyphae- has spiral appearance
Rhizoids- root like appearance
What are the types of HYPHAE?
Septate Hyphae- frequent crosswalls occuring perpendicular to the outer walls
Sparsely Septate Hyphae/Coenocytic/Aseptate- have few crosswalls at irregular intervals
What are the types of PIGMENTATION of HYPHAE
Hyaline hyphae- non pigmented or lightly pigmented
Phaeiod/Dematiacious hyphae- darkly pigmented
Yeast grow at ___C temperature
37C
Molds grow at __C temperature
22-25C
What are the 2 types of reproduction of fungi?
Sexual
Asexual
It is the type of reproduction that results in the formation of conidia following mitosis
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
It is a type of reproduction that requires two different hyphae that will fuse to form a zygospore
