my q's: aminoglycoside antimicrobials Flashcards
1
Q
General info
A
- bacteriocidal (inhibit the growth of bacteria)
- MOA: enters through cell wall, bind to ribosomes, leading to transcription of incorrect proteins while also opening membrane pores to allow more aminoglycosides to enter
- highly ionised, not good oral absorption
NOT used in food production animals
2
Q
Side effects
A
- can be toxic if given in high concentrations leading to accumulation of the drug (have to be careful)
- causes otoxicity (hearing/balance problems) - vestibular in cats and auditory in dogs
- nephrotoxicity causing acute renal failure
3
Q
examples of aminoglycosides used in practice
A
- gentamicin: used in conjunction with B-lactams, used in horses
- neomycin: used for ear infections
