Mutations Flashcards
1
Q
What are substitution mutations?
A
When one nucleotide and it’s partner gets replaced with another pair of nucleotides
2
Q
Silent Mutations
A
- Have no effect on the amino acid produced by a codon
- Because of redundancy in the genetic code
3
Q
Missense Mutations
A
Still code for an amino acid but not the correct one
4
Q
Nonsense mutations
A
- Change an amino acid codon into a stop codon
- Nearly always leading to a nonfunctional protein
5
Q
What are insertion mutations?
A
- Additions of nucleotide pairs in a gene
- Have a disastrous effect on the resulting protein
- Frameshift mutations
6
Q
What are deletion mutations?
A
- Losses of nucleotide pairs in a gene
- Have a disastrous effect on the resulting protein
- Frameshift mutation
