Mutations Flashcards
1
Q
What is a mutation?
A
A change in a DNA base caused by an error during interphase/DNA replication.
2
Q
What is a mutagenetic agent and examples?
A
Increases the likelihood of gene mutations. For example x-rays, viruses, gamma rays, tobacco smoke.
3
Q
What is a point mutation?
A
One ammino acid has changed in a sequence. (e.g:substitution)
4
Q
What is a frameshift mutation?
A
Removal or insertion of a nucleotide and causes many nucleotides to change.
5
Q
What is a nonsense mutation?
A
Results in 1 of 3 stop codons being formed.
6
Q
What is a mis-sense mutation?
A
A different ammino acid is coded for.
7
Q
What is a silent mutation?
A
Forms a different codon but no change to ammino acid formed.
