Classification Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
Classifying living organisms based on similarities and differences in to groups.
What is phylogeny?
Evolutionary history of relationships between groups of organisms based on genetic evidence.
What is a heirarchy?
Groups are divided into smaller groups which do not overlap based on physical appearence.
How can phylogeny show genetic relationships?
-Can see points of divergence- when a species divide into two.
-based on biochemical evidence (DNA,RNA)
What are the three domains?
Eukarya, bacteria and archaea.
What is the order of taxomony?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Family
Genus
Species
What is a species?
Group of similar organisms that can be interbred to produce fertile offspring.
What is the binomial naming system?
-Name by using genus then species name.
What are the 4 classification methods?
-DNA comparison
-mRNA sequence comparison
-Ammino acid sequence comparison
-Immunological comparisons.
How is base sequencing comparison done?
-Stretches of DNA are determined by sequencing.
-The more differences the less related 2 species are.
What is the difference between DNA sequencing and mRNA sequencing?
DNA uses thymine mRNA uses uracil.
What is DNA hydridisation?
-Determines similarity between species.
-DNA separates with heat.
-All stands pair back up to form hybrid DNA.
-Then heated again.
-High the denaturing temperature the more similar the DNA is ad more hydrogen bonds between complementary bases.
