what is the other name for the spinal column?
vertebral column
what’s the role of the spinal column?
a series of small bones forming a flexible and supportive structure down the back
what is each bone called?
vertebrae
what is found between the vertebrae?
discs of cartilage
what is the role of the discs of cartilage?
to cushion them during locomotion
what happens when the discs are moved out of place/
knows as ‘slipped disc’ and causes lower back pain
what are joints?
structures that connect individual bones and may allow bones to move against each other to cause movement
what are examples of joints?
-fibrous joints

what are muscles?
allow bones to move while contracting
what are antagonist muscles?
one muscle contracting while the other relaxes

what is the sliding filament theory?
filaments which slide over each other when a muscle contracts
