MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM Flashcards
FUNCTIONS OF THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM
- Provide support and structure for the body.
- Protect vital organs such as the heart, lungs and brain.
- Facilitates movement necessary for walking, running, flying and
perching. - Plays a role in egg production, with calcium from bones
contributing to eggshell formation. - Assist in respiration, as some bones are connected to the
respiratory system.
FEATURES OF THE CHICKEN SKELETON
Pneumatic Bones (hollow bones)
Medullary Bone
Fused Bones
hollow and contain air
sacs.
Pneumatic Bones (hollow bones)
The structures that result in a direct connection between the respiratory and skeletal systems in birds are
air sac diverticula
The condition in birds that involves air sacs and is relevant for meat inspection and fracture repair is
airsacculitis
it is the bone that grows under the influence of estrogen as
trabeculae of primitive bone almost filling the medullary cavity.
Medullary Bone
Provide rigidity and strength. Bones in the foot and
shank.
Fused Bones
Cause birds to walk upright.
Fused Bones
a bone contains a high amount of calcium. Storage source is used by the
female hen to produce the egg shell during reproductive periods.
Medullary Bone
Composed of hard keratinized epidermal tissue.
BEAK
This rostral structure forms part of the upper and lower
jaws.
Beak
It is the removal of approximately one-half of
the upper and lower levels, In some cases only the upper
the beak is removed.
Debeaking
has been used in the poultry
industry to prevent cannibalism
Debeaking
The vertebral column is divided into :
cervical
thoracic
lumbar
sacral
coccygeal
what vertebrae are the neck bones?
Cervical
what vertebrae in chest, area.
thoracic
what vertebrae are those in the abdominal
area.
Lumbar
what vertebrae are those in the tail
area.
Coccygeal
what vertebrae are those in the pelvic area.
sacral

THE BONES OF THE PECTORAL GIRDLE ARE THE?
CLAVICLE
CORACOID
SCAPULA
is part of the pelvic girdie, is a flat
bone on each side of the posterior half of the
synsacrum.
ischium
also known as the pin bone,
pubis
it is a flat-bone
on each side of the anterior half of the synsacrum.
