Species with 18 thoracic vertebrae
Equine
Is the bone a living organ?
Yes
Does the bone undergo change throughout life
Yes
Osteoblasts
Immature cells that can synthesise osteoid (bone matrix)
Osteocytes
Bone cells that maintain bone tissue, osteoblasts that have become trapped by the matrix
Osteoclasts
Cells that breakdown and remodel bone
What is the skeleton mainly made out of in young animals
Cartilage as animals grow the cartridge is converted to bone
How does bone development take place
Intramenbranous ossification
Or
Endochondral ossification
What type of bone growth has NO cartilage template but connective tissue
Flat bones of skull
What is endochondral ossification
The replacement of cartilage with bone
(Long bone)
Endochondral ossification primary
Appears on diaphysis of bone (on side)
Cartridge cells on side of bone converted in to bone. Osteoclasts the diaphysis into medullary cavity
Endochondral ossification secondary
Appears at epiphyses of bones (end of bones) growth plate creates new cartilage cells on the ends lingering the bone, once bone is fully grown cells stop dividing and all cartilage is ossified. (Turnt to bone)
