Immediate Treatment
Primary goal is to limit swelling and hemorrhaging
If controlled initially, rehabilitation time will be greatly reduced
Control via RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevate
Emergency Splinting
Should always splint a suspected fracture before moving.
Air splint
SAM Splint
Half-ring splint
Splint where patient lies and avoid moving them.
Always splint one joint above and one joint below injury
Lower LImb Splinting
Fractures of foot and ankle require splinting of foot and knee
Factures involving knee, thigh, or hip require splinting of whole leg and one side of trunk.
Upper Limb Splinting
Shoulder - sling and swath
Upper arm - splint with arm straight to lesson bone override
Lower Arm - splint in elbow flexion and supported by a sling
Hand and finger - aluminum splints, tongue depressors, roller gauze
Spine and Pelvis Splinting
Best splinted with spine board
Total body rapid immobilizers
