Musculoskeletal Flashcards
Three types of joints
Fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial joints
Fibrous Joints
Two types: sutures and syndesmoses. articulating surfaces are united by fibrous material. Degree of movement depends on length of fibers uniting articular surfaces.
Sutures
Type of fibrous joint. joints between cranial bones, little movement, held tightly.
Syndesmoses
Interosseous radioulnar joint. allows for supination and pronation.
Symphysis
Secondary cartilage joint. type of cartilage between bones is fibrocartilage. allows some movement. Pubic symphysis and intervertebral joints.
Synovial Joints
Diarthrodial. Seven types. Allow free movement between bones. contain an articular capsule, articular(hyaline) cartilage covers bony articular surfaces, synovial membrane covers the internal non-articular surfaces and produces synovial fluid for lubrication.
