Musculoskeletal Flashcards
Gout
Excessive Purine can lead to Uric Acid in the Body
Osteoporosis
Imbalance in bone resorption and formation.
Increased risk of fracture.
Weight-bearing can be painful.
Can cause kyphosis.
Muscular Dystrophy
Progressive loss of muscle tissue
Spasms (Muscle Spasms)
Atrophy
Wasting away or deterioration of the muscle.
Osteoarthritis/DJD (Degenerative Joint Disease
Progressive loss of joint function from overuse.
“Wear and Tear” of localized joint.
Chronic and progressive.
Deterioration of articulating cartilage.
Pain increases with weight-bearing activity.
Abnormal Spine Curvatures
Kyphosis: Rounded upper back.
Lordosis: Exaggerated lower back curve
Scoliosis: Sideways curvature.
May cause difficulty with breathing (mechanical).
Osteomyelitis
Infection in the Bone
Complications include abscess formation
Vitamin D Deficiency
Kids: Rickets (bow legged appearance)
Adult:Osteomalacia (softening of the bones)
Sciatica
Pain often starts in buttocks and extending down the back or side of one leg, with tingling and numbness.
Dislocation
joint becomes separated from bone causing loss of joint function
Amputation
Surgical Procedure to remove part of limb
Sprain
a tear in a ligament
Strain
injury to muscles or tendon
Fracture-there is an actual break in the bone
there is an actual break in the bone.

Loss of Function
Compression Fracture
Crushing or collapse of bone
Stress
Stress: Force of weight or from marathon running.
Complications of Fractures
Compartment Syndrome
Fat Embolism (Femur Fractures,
pelvic fractures, etc…).
Osteomyelitis
Osteonecrosis
Compartment Syndrome
Decreased blood flow to the area and extreme pain.
Can be a complication of fractures.
Causes PAIN and TISSUE DAMAGE
Five P’s of Compartment Syndrome
Paresthesia
Pain
Paralysis
Pulselessness
Pallor
Osteonecrosis
Death of bone tissue due to a loss of the blood supply to that tissue
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Genetic Mutation
Lowers Collagen in Bone
Makes Bones Brittle
Many types (19 or more)
Developmental Hip Dysplasia
Relaxation of ligaments around the hip joint.
Osteosarcoma Tumor
Bone cancer.
Extremely malignant.
Extremely painful.
Often in lower extremities.
Primarily affects children and young adults.
