one of the most common overuse injuries of the knee, refers to pain localized to the anterior portion of the knee. Common in young active atheletes, runners and women.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Examination findings for patellofemoral pain syndrom
observe gait and knee , note for any abnormalities, may note lateral patellar tracking.
Pain may be evident when rocking patella with leg extended.
pain and tenderness over medial aspect of knee below the joint line, common in middle-aged women with osteoarthritis
Anserine bursitis
swelling superficial to the patella, result of trauma occurring from frequent kneeling commonly in persons who work on their knees . Pain mild unless direct pressure is applied over the bursa. no pain to range of motion or weight bearing
Prepatellar bursitis (housemaid’s knee)
Tx for prepatellar bursitis (housemaid’s knee)
Rest, Ice, NSAIDS, prevent repeated trauma
acute pain and swelling f the knee that can progress to cartilage degeneration
Inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid, psoriatic or reactive arthritis. Gout and pseudogout
Most common cause of knee pain in the older adult. Pain stiffness and decreased function are cardinal signs. pain is often insidious and mild to moderate. rest may alleviate pain
Osteoarthritis
Tx for osteoarthritis
muscle strengthening, weight loss, analgesics, and NSAID, injection of steroid or hyaluronan may provide temporary relief, may require joint replacement.
