muscular system week 1 ( muscles that move the vertebral column and respiration) Flashcards
rectus abdominus
location: originates on the pubis and inserts superiorly on the lower ribs and xiphoid process
action: flexes the vertebral column and compresses the abdomen
external oblique
location: originates laterally on the lower ribs and inserts medially on the iliac crest and line alba
action: rotation of the trunk results if one side contracts. if both sides contract flexion of the vertebral column and compression of the abdomen in the result
internal oblique
location: located deep to the external oblique. originates laterally at the iliac crests and inserts medially at the linea alba and lower ribs
action: rotation of the trunk results if one side contracts. if both sides contract flexion of the vertebral column and compression of the abdomen in the result
transversus abdominis
location: located deep to the internal oblique, originates laterally on the iliac crest and the cartilages of the lower ribs and inserts medially at the xiphoid process and linea alba
action: contraction of the transverse abdominis compresses the abdomen
erector spinae:
iliocostalis group
longissiumus group
spinalis group
location: originate on vertebral processes or ribs and insert on superior processes of the vertebral column
action: when one side contracts the muscles laterally fled and rotate the vertebral column, when both contract the muscles extend the vertebral column and maintain erect posture
diaphragm
location: dome shaped muscle that originates on the lower ribs and lumbar vertebrae and inserts medially at the central tendon
action: during inspiration it moves downward in the thoracic cavity increasing the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the thorax
external intercostals
location: located between the ribs, originates on the inferior border of the superior rib and insert on the superior border of the inferior rib
action: contraction pulls the ribs upward and together to expand the dimensions of the thorax during forced inspiration
internal intercostals
location: between the ribs, originate of the superior border of the inferior rib and insert on the inferior border of the superior rib
action: contraction pulls the ribs down and together to decrease the dimensions of the thorax during formed expiration
