muscular system week 1 (muscles that move the arm) Flashcards
pectoralis major
location: anterior muscle of the trunk that originates on the clavicle, sternum, and upper ribs and inserts laterally on the greater tubercle of the humerus
action: flexes, adducts, and medially rotates the arm
latissimus dorsi
location: posterior muscle of the trunk that originates on the lower thoracic vertebrae and inserts on the anterior proximal humerus
action: adducts, extends, and medially rotates the arm
deltoid
location: large shoulder muscle that originates on the scapula posteriorly and clavicle anteriorly. it inserts on the deltoid tuberosity of the arm
action: medial fibers abduct the arm; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm
supraspinatus
location: originates on the supraspinatous fossa of the scapula and inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus
action: abducts the arm
infraspinatus
location: originates on the infraspinous fossa of the scapula and inserts on the greater tubercle of the humerus
action: laterally rotates and adducts the arm
teres major
location: originates of the inferior posterior surface of the scapula and inserts on the anterior proximal humerus
action: extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm
teres minor
location: originates on inferior lateral border of scapula and inserts on greater tubercle of the humerus
action: extends and laterally rotates the arm
subscapularis
location: originates on the subscapular fossa of scapula and inserts on the lesser tubercle of the humerus
action: medially rotates the arm
