muscular system Flashcards
skeletal muscle
interacts with skeletons to move body parts, Long, thin cells are called fibers, they have more than one nucleus, helps stabilize joint, voluntary, striated
smooth muscle
found in walls of hollow organs and blood vessels, smaller cells than skeletal muscle cells, not straited, one nucleus, involuntary
cardiac muscle
found only in the heart, can contract on its own without stimulation of the nervous system, involuntary, straited
how antagonistic muscle pairs work
one contracts while the other relaxes, each responsible for the opposing movement, biceps/triceps
slow or red fibers
more blood vessels that deliver more oxygen, more mitochondria- lots of ATP sustain slow contractions over long periods of time
“fast” and “white” fibers
faster, more powerful contractions can’t be sustained over long periods of time
