Diaphysis
Composed of compact bone which surrounds a central marrow cavity which contains red or yellow marrow.
Epiphysis
End part of a long bone, growing separately from the shaft, where growing takes place
growth plate (epiphyseal plate)
area of growing tissue near the ends of long bones. new bones grows from the epiphyseal plate and pushes a new bone outward
compact bone
denser material used to create a lot of the hard structure of skeletons, forms the cortex
spongy bone
located at the ends of long bones, contains red marrow, surrounded by compact bone
red marrow
produces red blood cells
yellow marrow
stores fats called adipocytes
articular cartilage
smooth, white tissue that covers the end of bones where they come together to form joints
