Muscular System Flashcards
What do ligaments do?
Ligaments attach bones to bones
What is cartilage?
Smooth, slightly elastic tissue it can be found in various forms around the body for example;
The ends of bones in synovial joints
The vertebrae of the spine are separated by discs of cartilage
The ribs attach to the sternum by cartilage
The hard part of your ear and nose are also cartilage.
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue plays a large part in stabilising the joints of the body. They also creat movement, act as a lubricant and shock absorber between bones.
There are three main types of connective tissue which are cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
Functions of the muscular system…
To create movement
To maintain good posture
To maintain bodily functions
Types of muscle…

Smooth muscles
Cardiac muscles
Skeletal muscles
Also known as striated
Attach to the skeleton
Responsible for body movement/exercise

Smooth muscles
Found in digestive system and other organs involuntary muscles.
Cardiac muscle
Found in the heart
Involuntary muscle
What do tendons do?
Tendons attach muscles to bones
