Muscular System Flashcards
Types of Muscles
Cardiac - Involuntary
Smooth - Involuntary
Skeletal - Voluntary
Function of Skeletal Muscles
Produce movement, attach to bones using tendons, contract to cause movement
Line of Pull
The direction of which a muscle is pulled
Origin
Attachment of a muscle that remains relatively fixed during muscle contraction
Insertion of Muscle
Muscle end attached to the bone that moves when the muscle contracts
Principles of Muscle Action
Muscle must cross at a joint to act on it, How a muscle crosses the joint reflects the action, when a muscle shortens it extends the joint
Fixator
Stabilizes other joints to prevent unwanted movement
Synergist
Help agonist muscle
Agonist
Primary mover
Antagonist
Opposite reaction, provides resistance
Origin of the Sternocleidomastoid
Upper part of manubrium, anterior border of medial 1/3 clavicle
Insertion of Sternocleidomastoid
Mastoid process of temporal bone
Function of Sternocleidomastoid
Flexion of head
Origin of external obliques
Lower body of 8 lower ribs
Insertion of external obliques
Anterior half of iliac crest, abdominal aponeurosis, (connective tissue) to crest of pubis and linea alba
Function of external obliques
Flexion of trunk, lateral flexion and rotation of trunk, tenses abdominal wall for protection
Origin of rectus abdominis
Crest of pubis
Insertion of rectus abdominis
Coastal cartilage of 5th, 6th, and 7th ribs
Function of rectus abdominis
Tenses abdominal wall
Origin of Trapezius
Nuchal line of occipital bone, vertebral spines c1-c7, vertebral spines t1-t12
Insertion of Trapezius
Posterior border, lateral 1/3 of clavicle, upper surface of acromion, upper border of scapular spine
Function of Trapezius
Upward rotation, elevation, depression, extension of neck, hyperextension, retraction of scapula
Origin of Infraspinatus
Infraspinatus fossa of scapula
Insertion of Infraspinatus
Greater tubercle of humerus
Function of Infraspinatus
Lateral rotation of humerus, abduction of shoulder, stabilizer of head of humerus
SITS Muscles
Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres minor, Subscapularis
Origin of the Pectoralis Major
Anterior surface, Proximal end of clavicle, Anterior surface of sternum, Costal cartilage of upper 6 ribs
