Muscular System Flashcards
How many muscles are in your body?
650
How many joints are in your body?
187
What are the three main types of muscle?
Skeletal, Cardiac and smooth
What are the skeletal muscles?
Voluntary and attach to bones
Form most of the system
Make up 30-40% of body weight
Generates most motion
Connected to the somatic nervous system
What are smooth muscles?
Involuntary and line internal organs
Managed by autonomic nervous system #
Contracts/relaxes in rhythmic cycle
Pumps blood through internal walls of blood vessels
Allows intestine to push food through digestive system
Allows uterus contractions when giving birth
What are cardiac muscles?
Involuntary and only in the heart
Managed by autonomic nervous system
Allows heart to thump (Supply blood + Oxygen)
All three muscle types are made of…
Tight bundled fibres
All three muscle types…
Recieve signal from nervous system that contract fibres
Generates force and motion
The only body part’s motion that doesn’t rely on this system are…..
Sperm cells, sylia, white blood cells
What are the muscle groups?
They contain 2 types of fibres. Fast twitch and slow twitch.
What is fast twitch?
Reacts instantly when triggered, but quickly uses up energy and tires out
What is slow twitch?
Endurance cells tht use energy slowly to work longer periods
What are the three main types of muscle contraction?
Shortening, lengthening and stabling
What is shortening?
Biceps shorten and pulls the arm up making it bend at the elbow
What is lengthening?
Triceps lengthen/relax straightening the arm down
