Injuries and treatment Flashcards
What are fractures?
A broken or cracked bone
What are the two types of fractures?
Open (Compound) and Closed (Simple)
What is a compound fracture?
The broken bone punctures the skin
What is a simple fracture?
The broken bone does not puncture the skin
What is a broken bone?
Leaks blood that contains collogen and cartilage
How does a broken bone heal?
Collagen and cartilage build a callus
The callus stays in place for 3 weeks
Osteoplasts cells move in that make tiny bits of bone and sets like cement
After a few weeks, your bones have repaired themself
What are dislocations?
Occur when a bone is no longer in it’s proper place in the joint
What is the most common dislocation?
Shoulder
What is a strain?
Injury to a tendon, which connects bone to muscle
What is a sprain?
Injury to a ligament which connects bone to bone
How do sprains heal?
Blood is sent gushing to the sprain and the area swells, protecting the joints from moving
The sprain gets hot so bacteria will not live there
Keep the sprain cool with ice and while blood cells get rid of the damage, new ligament cells arrive
After a few weeks, the ligaments get stronger
What happens if a injury swells too long?
Scar tissue will build up
What does CSM stand for?
Circulation, Sensation, Motion.
What is the general accronym for treatment of injuries
RICE (Rest, immobilize, cold and elevation)
