Muscular System Flashcards
What is the main purpose of the muscular system?
To provide movement
How does our brain tell our muscles to move?
By using nerves to give signals to our muscles which makes them move
What are the 5 main properties of the muscular system?
Excitable or irritable: capable of receiving stimulation and responding to it through nerves
Contractible: capable of contracting and relaxing after receiving stimulation
Extensible: able to stretch without getting damaged
Elastic: able to retain original state after being stretched
Adaptability: can change and adapt under different circumstances (e.g., getting stronger or wasting away)
What is hypertrophy and atrophy?
Hypertrophy is the enlargement and strengthening of muscles; atrophy is the wasting away of the muscle
What are the types of muscle movements?
Adduction: movement of a body to mid-line of body
Abduction: opposite of abduction
Flexion: bending of a muscle to decrease angle between two bones
Extension: opposite of flexion
Rotation: movement of a body part upon its axis
Muscle movement is either:
Voluntary (controlled) or involuntary (not controlled)
What are the 3 types of muscles?
Heart muscle: involuntary, helps heart pump blood
Visceral muscle: involuntary and slow, repetitive movements; muscles of other organs
Skeletal muscles: voluntary, attached to bones
What are tendons?
Parts that connects bone to muscle
What is fascia?
Part that connects muscle to muscle
What are ligaments?
Part that connects bone to bone
What would happen to the muscles in your body if your nervous system can’t send signal?
All your muscles wouldn’t be able to function except for the cardiac muscle as it has its own electrical cells to keep if functional
Tell us about striated and smooth muscle tissues.
Striated: striped; seen on cardiac and skeletal muscles
Smooth: all visceral muscles are smooth
