muscular system Flashcards

1
Q

Functions?

A
  • movement : facial expressions, actions, breathing (by contracting and relaxing)
  • protection : provides support to other body systems and cushions internal organs from force - applied to the body
  • heat generation : helps maintain internal body temperature, generates heats to overly cool - - body when shivering
  • blood circulation : aids pumping actions of the heart

Q

Types of muscles and functions?

A
  1. skeletal muscles
    - aid movement in the body
    - maintain balance and posture
  2. cardiac muscles
    - contracts to allow the heart to pump blood through circulatory system
  3. smooth muscles
    - form organs like the lungs and bladder
    - allow them to facilitate bodily functions
    - digestion and nutrient collection
    - help ridden the body of toxins

Q

Agonist + Antagonist musles

A
  1. Agonist
    - the muscle that contracts (shortens) during movement
    - biceps in a bicep curl
  2. Antagonist
    - the muscles that relaxes or lengthens during movement
    - triceps in a bicep curl

Q

Where thing are in the body?

A
  1. Medial
    - center of the body (towards the middle)
    - back and inside of the knee
  2. Lateral
    - side of the body
    - latissimus dorsi
  3. Anterior
    - front of the body
    - quads
  4. Prosterier
    - back of the body
    - hamstrings

Q

Muscle contractions?

A
  1. Concentric
    - muscles shorten while generating force
    - flexion
    - agonist muscles
  2. Eccentric
    - muscles lengthen while tension is produced
    - extension
    - antagonist muscles
  3. Isometric
    - the length of muscles remains unchanged as tension is produced
    - wall sits

Isotonic) concentric + eccentric
- tension/resistance on the muscle (the weight on your muscles stays constant)
- movement is consistent
Isokenetic) isometric
- same length (your muscles do not get longer or shorter)

Q

Muscle Fibres

A
  1. Slow twitch
    - long periods of time
    - moderate/ low intensity
    - marathon running
    - use glucose and oxygen to generate ATP through aerobic metabolic exercies
  2. Fast twitch
    - short and fast movements
    - more prone to fatigue than slow twitch
    - spinting and weightlifting
    - generate ATP through anaerobic exercies

The proportions of each type of muscle fibre present in a body is genetically predetermined.
