Muscular, Skeletal, and Circulatory Systems Flashcards
What do skeletal muscles do?
move the skeleton
Skeletal Muscle Characteristics
striated
usually attached to bones via tendons
voluntary
What do smooth muscles do?
transport materials throughout the body
Smooth Muscle Characteristics
no striations
involuntary
What do cardiac muscles do?
contract rhythmically without wearing out
Cardiac Muscle Characteristics
found in the heart
striated
involuntary
What do osteoclasts do?
move through our bones and break down old cells to make room for new ones
the small tunnels they create are called haversian canals
What do osteoblasts do?
construct new bone matrix inside the haversian canals
What are osteocytes?
mature bone cells
Red Blood Cells
use hemoglobin to carry oxygen throughout the body and remove carbon dioxide
White Blood Cells
protect the body from disease causing organisms
produced in the bone marrow and lymph nodes
Platelets
help blood clot near wounds
Arteries
carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
Capillaries
the smallest blood vessels; this is where gas exchange occurs
Veins
carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
How does blood flow through the heart?
Deoxygenated blood flows from the inferior and superior vena cava into the right atrium, into the right ventricle.
Blood then goes to the lungs through two pulmonary arteries.
Oxygenated blood returns to the heart through four pulmonary veins.
The blood is pushed into the left atrium, into the left ventricle.
Blood exits the heart through the aorta.
