Muscular Flexibility Flashcards
Week 7 Lecture 10
What is muscular flexibility?
achievable range of motion at a joint or group of joints
What are four benefits of good flexibility?
improves and maintains good posture, promotes proper body movements, maintains good ROM and enhances QOL, improves elasticity of muscles and connective tissues.
what happens when there is a decline in flexibility?
causes poor posture and subsequent aches and pains that lead to limited and painful movements.
What four factors affect flexibility?
adipose tissue, muscular elasticity/genetics, body temperature and age.
What can too much flexibility cause?
leads to unstable joints and loose joints, ex. may lose your balance while bending over.
What can warming the muscle increase?
flexibility
What can cooling the muscle impede?
range of motion
What is static stretching?
exercises in which the muscles are lengthened gradually through a joints complete ROM.
what are two examples of grades/progressive slpints?
resting hand splint, or DIP splint
How are passive stretching exercises performed?
with the aid of an external force applied by either another individual or machine.
What are three OT examples of passive stretching?
CPM, PROM, and SROM.
What is active-assistive ROM? (AAROM)
range of motion done by the therapist
What is a CPM machine an example o?
PROM
What is Ballistic stretching?
fast repetitive bouncing to achieve greater degree of stretch, performed through gentle, slow and controlled movements.
What is PNF?
based on contract and relax, which requires the assistance of another person.
