Muscular Endurance Evaluation and Interventions Flashcards
what is muscular endurance?
Combination of muscular strength and ability to perform multiple
repetitions of a contraction without fatigue
what are symptoms of muscle fatigue?
- Cramping
- Burning
- Tremor
what can Prolonged muscle
immobilization/disuse lead to?
muscle atrophy then decreased muscle endurance / deconditioning
how can endurance be measured?
statically (amount of time a contraction can be held)
dynamically (number of
reps per unit of time)
what may influence the choice of measurement?
- functional goal of the patient
- MSK, neurological or cardiopulmonary status
what aspects of activity does endurance evaluations consider?
- Intensity (resistance/speed)
- Duration (time)
- Frequency (reps)
what is a simple means to quantify the physiological demand of a dynamic activity for a particular
person, and effort?
HR
what is cardiorespiratory endurance?
ability of the circulatory and
respiratory system to supply oxygen during a task
what are endurance evaluations?
- Person based e.g. dressing, showering
- Home management e.g. cleaning
- Functional work assessments
how are muscle strength and endurance related?
typically, as muscle strength increases so does endurance
how long can we hold 25% MVC?
5-6 mins
how long can we hold 50% MVC?
1-2 mins
how long can we long 100% MVC?
momentarily
what are some specific individual endurance interventions?
- Stress/Pain mgmt
- Energy conservation/work
simplification - Occupation based mobility/strength’g
- Devices – adaptive, splinting, etc may help with pain mgmt. and enabling functional performance
what are some return to work endurance interventions?
- Work conditioning / hardening / Job
Site Coaching - Transitional/gradual RTW
- Ergonomics
