Muscolokeletal System Flashcards
What are the functions of bone?
- Provide a frame for the body
- Give shape to the body
- Allow for movement
- Protect internal structures
- Produce blood cells
- Store Calcium and Phosphorus
What are the 3 types of Muscles?
Types of Muscles:
- Voluntary or Striated
- Involuntary or Smooth
- Cardiac, looks similar to striated but is involuntary
Types of Bones
- Long bones: arms, legs
- Short bones: wrist, ankle
- Flat bones: skull, ribs, sternum
- Irregular bones: hip bone, vertebrae
- Sesamoid bones: patella (knee cap)
Muscles to know
Biceps, trapezius, deltoid, triceps, tendons, hamstrings, quadriceps
Describe the changes that normally occur in the musculoskeletal system with aging?
- Reduced muscle mass and strength
- Decreased bone density.
- Joint stiffness
- Brittle Bones
All together they contribute to pain, decreased height and loss of mobility
What are the 3 major types of joints? Describe their functions.
Fibrous or immovable
Cartilaginous or slightly moveable
Synovial or freely movable
Distinguish between involuntary and voluntary muscles
- Involuntary muscles function automatically without your awareness
- Voluntary muscles are under conscious control while
Define the following:
- Ligament
- Joint
- Tendon
Ligament: strong bands of tissue that hold joints together (bone to bone)
Joint: Where 2 or more bones meet (allow movements)
Tendon: strong, tough connective tissue (bone to muscle)
Functions of Muscles?
Functions:
- Allow for movements
- Maintain posture/support
- Produce heat (shivering)
