Muscles Upper Extremity OIA Flashcards
Origin Insertion Action
Pectoralis Major
O: Medial Clavicle, Sternum and costal cartilages of ribs 2-6
I: Intertubercular groove
A: Flexes, adducts, and medially rotates humerus
Pectoralis Minor
O: Ribs 3-5
I: Coracoid process of the scapula
A: pulls scapula forward and downward. If scapula is fixed, it elevates ribs`
Trapezius
O: Superiod nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, ligamentum nuchae, spinous processes of C7 and all thoracic vertebrae
I: Lateral clavicle, spine and acromion process of the scapula
A: Adducts scapula, elevates and rotates shoulder upward, if the scapula is fixed it draws the head backward.
Levator scapulae
Runs from the vertebral border of the scapula to the cervical vertebrae
A: elevates scapula
Latissimus dorsi
O: Lower thoracic, lumbar and sacral vertebrae, thoracolumbar fascia
I: Intertubercular groove
A: Extends adducts and medially rotates the humerus
Serratus anterior
Runs from the vertebral border of the scapula to the lateral and somewhat anterior surface of the ribs.
A: holds scapula to chest wall, rotates scapula so shoulder moves upward
Rhomboideus major
Runs from the vertebral border of the scapula to the spines of the upper thoracic vertebrae
A: adducts scapula, rotates the scapula so shoulder moves downward
Rhomboideus minor
Similar to Rhomboideus major
A: adducts scapula, rotates the scapula so shoulder moves downward
Deltoid
O: Lateral clavicle, acromion process and spine of scapula
I: deltoid tuberosity
A: flexes, extends and abducts arm
Supraspinatus
(supraspinous fossa to greater tubercle of the humerus)
A: abducts the arm
Infraspinatus
(infraspinous fossa to greater tubercle)
A: laterally rotates humerus
Teres major
(runs from the inferior axillary border of the scapula to the medial side of the intertubercular groove)
A: extends, adducts and medially rotates humerus
Teres Minor
(Located superior to the teres major)
A: laterally rotates humerus
Subscapularis
(begins in the subscapular fossa and runs to the lesser tubercle)
A: adducts and medially rotates the humerus
Coracobrachialis
O: Coracoid process of the scapula
I: Medial Humerus
A: flexes and adducts the humerus
Biceps brachii
O: coracoid process and above the glenoid fossa
I: Radial tuberosity
A: flexes arm and forearm, supinates hand
Brachialis
(Large flat muscle on the arm below the biceps brachii)
A: flexes forearm
Triceps
O: below the glenoid fossa and posterior shaft of the humerus
I: olecranon process of ulna
A: Extends arm and forearm
Brachioradialis
O: ridge above the lateral epicondyle of the humerus
I: Styloid process of the radius
A: Flexes forearm
Flexor carpi radialis
A: Flexes and abducts wrist
Flexor carpi ulnaris
A: flexes and adducts wrist
Flexor Digitorum superficialis
A: Flexes fingers, flexes wrist and elbow
Flexor digitorum profundus
A: Flexes all phalanges of all fingers, flexes wrist
Palmaris Longus
A: tenses palmar aponeurosis, flexes forearm and wrist
