Muscles of the shoulder Flashcards
What two classifications can the shoulders muscles be divided into?
extrinsic- originate from torso and attach to the bones of the shoulder (clavicle, scapula, humerus)
intrinsic- originate from the scapula and/or clavicle and attach to the humerus
what are the two superficial muscles?
trapezius and latissimus dorsi
origin of the trapezius
skull, nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7-T12
insertion of trapezius
clavicle, acromion and scapula spine
innervation of the trapezius
accessory nerve (motor) proprioceptor fibres from C3 and C4 spinal nerves
functions of the trapezius
upper fibres of trapezius- elevate scapula and rotate it during abduction
middle fibres of trapezius- retract the scapula
lower fibres of trapezius- pull the scapula inferiorly
origin of latissimus dorsi
T7-T12, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia and 3 pairs of inferior ribs
insertion of latissimus dorsi
intertubercular sulcus of the humerus
innervation of latissimus dorsi
thoracodorsal nerve
functions of the latissimus dorsi
extends, adducts and medially rotates the upper limbs
What are the three deep muscles?
levator scapulae, x2 rhomboids
origin of the levator scapulae
transverse process of C1-C4
insertion of the levator scapulae
medial border of the scapula
innervation of the levator scapulae
dorsal scapular nerve
functions of the levator scapulae
elevates the scapula
What are the two rhomboid muscles called?
rhomboid minor and rhomboid major (rhomboid minor is superior to rhomboid major)
origin of rhomboid major
spinous processes of T2-T5
insertion of rhomboid major
medial border of the scapula (between scapula spine and inferior angle)
innervation of rhomboid major
dorsal scapular nerve
functions of the rhomboid major
retracts and rotates the scapula
