Muscles of the pectoral region Flashcards
what are the 4 muscles in the pectoral region?
pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior and subclavius
origin of the pectoralis major
clavicular head- anterior surface of the medial clavicle
sternocostal head- anterior surface of the sternum, superior 6 costal cartilages and aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle
insertion of the pectoralis major
interlobular sulcus of the humerus
function of the pectoralis major
adducts and medially rotates the upper limb and draws the scapula anteroinferiorly.
clavicular head- individually flexes the upper limb
innervation of the pectoralis major
lateral and medial pectoral nerves
origin of the pectoralis minor
3rd,4th and 5th ribs
insertion of the pectoralis minor
coracoid process of the scapula
innervation of the pectoralis minor
medial pectoral nerve
function of the pectoralis minor
stabilises the scapula (draws it anteroinferiorly against the thoracic wall)
origin of the serratus anterior
ribs 1-8 (consists of several strips)
insertion of the serratus anterior
costal surface (rib facing) surface of the medial border of the SCAPULA
innervation of the serratus anterior
long thoracic nerve (comes of the brachial plexus)
function of the serratus anterior
rotates the scapula, allowing the arm to be raised over 90 degrees
also holds the scapula against the ribcage
origin of the subclavius
junction of the 1st rib and its costal cartilage
insertion of the subclavius
inferior surface of the middle third of the clavicle
