MUSCLES OF THE PELVIC DIAPHRAGM Flashcards
what are the muscles of the pelvic diaphragm?
levator ani muscles
what comprises the levator ani muscles?
pubococcygeus m
iliococcygeus m
puborectalis m
what is the origin of the levator ani m.
posterior aspect of the pubic body, the tendinous
arch of the levator ani muscles (a specialized
thickening of the obturator fascia), and the ischial
spine
what is the insertion of the levator ani m.
anococcygeal raphe /
anococcygeal ligament
action of the levator ani muscles
Acting together these three muscles support the pelvic viscera and raise the pelvic floor. They resist intraabdominal pressure and are important in forced expiration, coughing, vomiting, urination, and defecation.
levator ani m arterial supply
inferior rectal a. via internal
pudendal a.
levator ani m inervation
innervation from S-4, the
inferior rectal nerve (branch
of the pudendal nerve), and
the coccygeal plexus
coccygeus m origin
ischial spine
coccygeus m insertion
inferior end of the sacrum
and coccyx
coccygeus m action
Supports the pelvic
viscera. Flexes the
coccyx, important in
defecation.
coccygeus m arterial supply

pudendal a.
coccygeus m innervation
S-4 and S-5 and inferior rectal nerve (branch of the
pudendal nerve)
