MEDIAL MUSCLES OF THE THIGH Flashcards
what layers comprise the medial compartment of the thigh?
anterior -pectineus m -adductor longus m intermediate -adductor brevis m posterior -adductor magnus m -gracilis m
PECTINEUS M. ORIGIN
pecten pubis (pectineal line) (from the pubic tubercle to the iliopectineal eminence)
PECTINEUS M. INSERTION
pectineal line of the femur - courses posteroinferolaterally (and
crosses the obturator externus muscle)
PECTINEUS M. ACTION
adduct and flex the thigh
PECTINEUS M. ARTERY
obturator artery and medial femoral circumflex artery
PECTINEUS M. INNERVATION
femoral nerve
ADDUCTOR LONGUS M. ORIGIN
anterior pubic body (inferior to the pubic crest and lateral to
the pubic symphysis)
ADDUCTOR LONGUS M. INSERTION
medial lip of the linea aspera (middle 1/3) - courses posteroinferolaterally
ADDUCTOR LONGUS M.
ACTION
adduct and flex the thigh; aids in lateral rotation of the thigh
ADDUCTOR LONGUS M.
ARTERY
obturator artery and medial femoral circumflex artery
ADDUCTOR LONGUS M. INNERVATION
obturator nerve (anterior branch)
ADDUCTOR BREVIS M ORIGIN
anterior surface of the inferior pubic ramus
ADDUCTOR BREVIS M INSERTION
pectineal line of the femur and (superior ½ of the) medial lip of the linea aspera; shared with
pectineus and adductor longus muscles
- courses posteroinferolaterally
ADDUCTOR BREVIS M ACTION
adduct and flex the thigh; aids in
lateral rotation of the thigh
ADDUCTOR BREVIS M ARTERY
obturator artery and medial femoral circumflex artery
ADDUCTOR BREVIS M INNERVATION
obturator nerve (anterior or posterior branch)
ADDUCTOR MAGNUS M. ORIGIN
anterior to posterior orientation of fibers at origin
a. inferior aspect of the inferior
pubic ramus
b. ischial ramus
c. inferolateral part of the ischial tuberosity
ADDUCTOR MAGNUS M. INSERTION
superior to inferior orientation of
fibers at insertion
a. gluteal tuberosity (medial edge)
b. medial lip of the linea aspera
and the medial supracondylar line
c. medial supracondylar line and
adductor tubercle
- passes from a near sagittal plane
origin to a near frontal plane insertion pass almost directly inferior.
- the superior fibers of the adductor magnus muscle are sometimes referred to as the
adductor minimus muscle
- the inferior / vertical fibers of the adductor magnus muscle are
often termed the hamstring part of
the adductor magnus muscle
- can palpate the tendon of the hamstring part of the adductor magnus muscle.
ADDUCTOR MAGNUS M. ACTION
adduct the thigh; aid in flexion and extension of the thigh (due to the
rotation from origin to insertion)
ADDUCTOR MAGNUS M. ARTERY
medial femoral circumflex artery,
perforating arteries of the profunda femoris artery (n=4), obturator artery, and popliteal
artery
ADDUCTOR MAGNUS M. INNERVATION
obturator nerve (posterior branch); all except the hamstring part; tibial part of sciatic nerve; hamstring part
GRACILIS M ORIGIN
anterior aspect of the pubic body (inferior part), inferior
pubic ramus (medial part) and pubic symphysis (inferior
aspect)
GRACILIS M INSERTION
proximal medial shaft of the tibia
-forms part of the pes anserinus
-courses inferiorly and passes posterior to the medial femoral
condyle
GRACILIS M ACTION
adduct the thigh; flex the leg; aids in medial rotation of the leg (at the knee)
