Muscles of the Larynx Flashcards
2 “groups” of muscles
- Intrinsic
2. Extrinsic
Intrinsic muscles of the larynx function
- open
- close
- control tension
of the vocal cords
Extrinsic muscles of the larynx function
- connects many structures [larynx to hyoid bone & others]
* moves the larynx as a WHOLE during phonation, swallowing, breathing
Intrinsic muscles of the larynx names (5)
*hint: controls vocal cord movement
- posterior cricoarytenoid
- lateral cricoarytenoid
- arytenoids
- cricothyroid
- thyroarytenoid
Action of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle
In
ABducts (opens) the vocal cords & glottis
Action of the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle
In
ADducts (close) the vocal cords
Action of the arytenoid muscle
In
ADducts (close) the vocal cords
Action of the cricothyroid muscle
In
- cord tension
- closure -per pwpt (ADduction?? - not in pwpt)
- elongates vocal cords
*can result in total & profound glottic closure = laryngospasm
Action of the thyroarytenoid muscle
In
- shortens vocal cords
- relaxes vocal cords
muscle of the larynx responsible for laryngospasm
cricothyroid muscle
Extrinsic muscles of the larynx names (6)
- Sternohyoid
- Sternothyroid
- Omohyoid
- Thyrohyoid
- Stylohyoid
- Mylohyoid
Action of the sternohyoid muscle
Ex
hyoid bone INFERIOR
same as thyrohyoid
Action of the sternothyroid muscle
Ex
thyroid cartilage pulled caudad (towards tail, posterior end, down?)
Action of the thyrohyoid muscle
Ex
hyoid bone INFERIOR
same as sternohyoid
Action of the omohyoid muscle
Ex
hyoid bone caudad (towards tail, posterior end, down?)
